    Drill levels

    How levels work

Each drill has ten levels. A key counts once you play three clean takes in a row there, at whatever tempo you choose: at least 90% of notes, 80% even timing, no pauses, and no drift of more than 8% across the take, in even notes. The streak is credited at the slowest of its three takes. Level 1 needs one key at the starting tempo. Each later level needs more keys (2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 16, then 20) at an evenly rising share of the drill's tempo ladder, and from level 4 hands together where the drill allows it. The suggested tempo then moves one metronome mark past it; two takes without a clean rep lower the suggestion. It is only an invitation: play faster or slower and you are credited at the tempo you played. Milestones are RCM 2022 minimum tempos for the drill family.

    Practice session

The coach picks your weakest drill and stays on it for a block of the session, so you improve one thing rather than sampling many. Then it moves to the next weakest.

    How to read your levels

Levels 1–5 are practice stages within this app, not exam grades. They use up to 12 recent assessed attempts per skill, requiring at least three attempts and 85% weighted accuracy at that stage. A skill’s overall level summarizes the material you tried; expand it to see which notes, keys, and conditions it covers. It does not establish mastery of untested material.

Pitch and rhythm are compared with the task. A steady slower tempo preserves your rhythm score; controlled speed uses the suggested tempo. Loudness is an approximate within-phrase estimate from microphone audio. Free improvisation contributes experience, with no “correct notes” or creativity score. Hearing or revealing an answer changes which skills the attempt can assess.

Recognized notes, prompts, help used, and assessment details are stored locally. Audio recordings are never saved. If the microphone gets something wrong, exclude the attempt and your profile will be recalculated.

    Need a hint?

Middle C is just to the left of the pair of black keys nearest the center of your piano. The white keys going upward are C, D, E, F, G, A, B, then C again. The number after a note is its octave: middle C is C4. Take your time, then press Finish attempt or space. Using a hint is saved with your attempt.
